Excellent drumming by Heinz Lichius and the soulful sound of Joe Gallardo on trombone round out the disc. Great classic tunes are covered, along with some originals, including “My One and Only Love,” “Skylark,” “Besame Mucho,” “Blues In The Night” and “No X-Cess Baggage Blues.”

Jon Hammond Impromptu Jam at the AMAC 2014 Electro-Voice Stand
The music veteran tried out the ETX loudspeaker in an improvised jazz performance.

Posted on 01 September 2014 by Shaun Gah

QUEENSLAND, AUSTRALIA – The music products industry gathered again on Queensland’s Gold Coast for professional development sessions and a two-day trade show. Almost 500 professionals, covering a wide range of Australian music industry suppliers and retailers, took part at the Australian Music Association Convention which was held in the ever-popular Jupiters Casino.

The convention featured a number of notable key speakers and accomplished musicians to keep attendees educated as well as entertained. Amongst the key figures were Larry Morton, current NAMM Chairman and President of Hal Leonard Corporation; Jon Hammond, renowned Hammond organ player and founder of the Jon Hammond Band; Ambre Hammond (no-relation to Jon) leading Australian piano musician and Guinness record holder for receiving Associate and Licentiate Diplomas of music at the age of 11; and Lloyd Spiegel, one of Australia’s leading blues guitarists.

Bosch Communications Systems, a regular at AMAC, exhibited the latest products from our Electro-Voice and Dynacord brands including EV’s ZLX, ELX and ETX Powered Loudspeaker families, and Dynacord’s TS Vertical Array Cabinets, the tiny but feature-packed PM 502 Powered Mixer, and the versatile AXM 12A Coaxial Powered Monitor with onboard DSP.

For the first time in EV’s history, the brand had three “best-in-class” loudspeaker families on display covering entry-level through to pro-audio markets. ZLX loudspeakers are the number one selling powered speakers in the American market and have won Best of Show at NAMM 2013. The 2000 W ETX powered loudspeakers have been labelled as the most advanced product in its price range and have won Best of Show at NAMM 2014. Sitting in between is the ever-popular ELX range which represents a high-quality sound system at a mid-range price.

The ETX loudspeaker display drew a lot of attention during the show, including that of Jon Hammond, one of the finest B3 players in the world. Jon reminisced about his first experience with EV speakers back in 1964, when he installed EV SRO speakers in a Fender Band-Master, partially visible in the image below.

“I have a particular fondness for EV speakers. My very first pro amplifier was a 1964 blonde Fender Band-Master in which I installed the white EV SRO Speakers. Yes, I lugged that 2 x 12 speaker box around everywhere and it was impossible to blow it up – my whole band would plug in to it, we thought in those days because the amp was called Band-Master that the whole band should plug in to it, bass and all – no problem and it was loud and clear!”

From left to right: Simon Ert on Gretsch Drums, Chris Connolly on Grover Jackson Guitar and the legendary “Buchanan Hammer” EV 664 Dynamic Cardioid Microphone, and Jon Hammond on Hammond Sk1, mixed using Dynacord PowerMate 600 and played through ETX Powered Loudspeakers.

After swapping a few stories Jon was curious to see how his Hammond Sk1 would sound with the ETX loudspeakers. Following a quick connection via a Dynacord PowerMate 600, Jon belted a few tunes just before the close of day one of the exhibition. He promised to come back the following day with a jazz guitarist who turned out to be Chris Connolly, a well known figure in the audio and music products industry. While setting up for the jam session Simon Ert, a jazz percussionist representing Gretsch drums on the neighbouring stand, volunteered to complete the trio. What followed was half an hour of cool jazz tunes and sweet sound.

Check out an excerpt of the performance on YouTube:

“I love coming to the AMAC shows, in just a few years I have forged some lasting friendships and am fortunate enough to meet some really outstanding musicians” said Jon. “The timing was perfect to have a session like that what we did – thank you so much for accommodating us with the superb EV powered speakers. I heard from friends who were all the way across the hall that they could hear us clear as a bell. It was so much fun, that’s the kind of thing I live for and only happens in a special place and people such as the EV stand at AMAC!”

THING in C MINOR – JON HAMMOND Band in Hamburg

JonHammondBand | September 09, 2006
Website: Jon Hammond is one of the premier B3 PLAYERS in the world. Jon has played professionally since age 12. Beginning as a solo accordionist, he later played Hammond B3 organ in a number of important San Francisco bands. His all original group HADES opened shows for Tower of Power, Quicksilver Messenger Service and Michael Bloomfield. Eddie Money and Barry Finnerty became musical associates. Moving East he attended Berklee College of Music and played venues as diverse as Boston’s “Combat Zone” in the striptease clubs during the ’70’s and the exclusive Wychmere Harbor Club in Cape Cod, where he was house organist and developed a lasting friendship with House Speaker Tip O’Niel. He also toured the Northeast and Canada with the successful show revue “Easy Living”, and continued his appearances at nightclubs in Boston and New York. Subsequently Hammond lived and traveled in Europe, where he has an enthusiastic following.

Kiel – It seems that the invitation to have earnest. Before the concert Jon Hammond puts the reviewer baffled his business card in hand. “Hi, I’m Jon, without h. If you have the next time you’re in New York, come over!”

Für den Weltenbummler sind Orte nur Stationen auf seinem Lebensweg. Chicago, Paris, Frankfurt-Bornheim, Hamburg-St.Pauli, New York.

The fingers are the singers“.

For the globetrotter only stations are places on his life. Chicago, Paris, Frankfurt-Bornheim, Hamburg-St.Pauli, New York. The many people and musicians who know the organist, are the basis on which his subsequent references, anecdotes and stories song builds. And Jon knows them all.

The concert at the Blue Angel trades under The Jon Hammond Show. Why, feel the viewers already after the first announcement. Jon Hammond is a showman, a Dampfplauderer, trained in decades as a radio and TV presenter. On top is the 55-year-old is an excellent organist at the Hammond organ. With the instrumental jazz revue he goes to the footsteps of Miles Davis, The Crusaders and Jimmy Smith, always acting under the slogan: “The fingers are the singers.”

In the game’s Jon Hammond absolutely in his music and his passion for the good old Hammond sound. At the age of 18 he purchased his first Hammond B3 and the band toured with Hades in the act for Tower of Power or Michael Bloomfield. Only in 1991, he is a digital and easier to XB-2. A veritable connoisseur: he weighs his head constantly from one side to another, winding up as Stevie Wonder on his fingers. The left hand is largely replaced the role a bass player, in addition to the various sounds, which he manually adjusted.

Not to replace the musicians, the show Jon Hammond on the scene complete. Heinz Lichius drums as in each of its formations to the very best, the 26-year-old Sebastian Gille perplexed Gabriel instead of Coburger on saxophone with subtle, though powerful solos and guitarist Joe Berger is like a string Hasardeur. Even if he is not the former Who guitarist, as it is the Organizer’s Info weismachen wants – at least he played with Who bassist John Entwistle and arranged for his band in the studio mix.

A main feature of the instrumental songs: catchy melody and strong grooves. Jon Hammond handles the sad encounter with a girl in Paris or the Czech King Salsa as well as rooting the night in the hotel garbage. In addition to jazz elements is his style deeply rooted in rock, funk, East Bay Grease, Bossa Nova, Soul and Rhythm & Blues. Sometimes the sound shallow pieces, most notably Duke Ellington
Satin Doll or
Moanin ‘by Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers, as on a cruise ship, but the early protagonists break the rudder around, they joke with Shuffle and Radio welding on the other hand hold.
